Many New England Patriots fans would agree that running back Rhamondre Stevenson is the team's best offensive weapon.
However, the fourth-year pro has hit a rough patch, posting one fumble in four straight games to open the 2024 season.
On Wednesday morning, head coach Jerod Mayo said that Stevenson's issues could result in running back Antonio Gibson taking over as the starter.
Mayo on whether he would start Antonio Gibson over Rhamondre Stevenson, who has fumbled four times in four games:

"That's definitely under consideration... We can't preach ball security is job security and still have him out there the majority of the time."
Stevenson played 12 games and made two starts as a rookie in 2021, splitting touches with Damien Harris. Harris missed six contests in 2022, and Stevenson took advantage of the opportunity to have the best season of his career thus far.
The Oklahoma product played in all 17 games two years ago, leading New England by a significant margin in rushing attempts (210), rushing yards (1,040) and touches (279) while pacing the team in rushing touchdowns (five) and receptions (69) as well.
Stevenson's numbers regressed in 2023, partly due to being limited to 12 games. Stevenson finished last season with 156 carries for 619 yards and four scores, though his 4.0 yards per reception were a career-low.
He started 2024 with a huge Week 1 performance in the team's 16-10 upset road win against the Cincinnati Bengals, recording 25 rushing attempts for 120 yards and one touchdown. Stevenson's efficiency decreased in the Patriots' Week 2 overtime defeat vs. the Seattle Seahawks, but he still had 81 yards and one score on 21 carries.
In the last two games, he's combined for just 66 scoreless yards on 19 totes while adding his third and fourth fumbles.
On Wednesday, he said that he understands that he needs to improve his ball security and is willing to accept the consequences if he doesn't.
Rhamondre Stevenson: “I’m super tough on myself. I’m more disappointed in myself than anyone could ever be. It’s very simple - I just have to hold on to the ball and have that mentality to come up with the ball every time. It’s my job to do that and I haven’t been doing it well.”

Rhamondre Stevenson on if he expects his snaps to be reduced:

“It could happen. Yeah. I put the ball on the ground four times. I have to accept whatever decisions they make upstairs. I’m still going to go out there every day, practice how I practice, and get ready to play.”
Given his past success and the team's lack of offensive star power, though, it'd be a shock to see Stevenson completely phased out of the game plan.
