Jerod Mayo knows the offense was a massive problem last season, so he is doing everything he can to fix it.
Multiple sources report that after hiring new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, the Patriots are also bringing in former Giants head coach Ben McAdoo.
This has been in the works for a bit, with reports that the two sides were discussing things. And now it's official.
According to the Boston Herald's Andrew Callahan, McAdoo's title has not been finalized, but the expectation is that he will serve as a senior offensive assistant.
He also has worked with Van Pelt and Patriots director of scouting Eliot Wolf during his time in Green Bay.
McAdoo began his coaching career at the high school level before transitioning to college in 2001 at Michigan State. He had stints at Fairfield and Pittsburgh before getting his first opporuntity in the NFL.
The New Orleans Saints hired him as the offensive quality control coach for the 2004 season, but in 2005 he departed to become the assistant offensive line coach for the San Franscico 49ers.
From 2006-11 he served as the tight ends coach for the Green Bay Packers and then moved to become the quarterbacks coach from 2012-13. That's where he overlapped with Van Pelt and Wolf.
McAdoo went to the New York Giants in 2014, serving as the offensive coordinator for two seasons before being promoted to head coach. But he failed to last through two seasons in that role.
Afterwards, he went back to his roots as a quarterbacks coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars and then moved to become a consultant for the Dallas Cowboys in 2021.
His last roll was as offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers in 2022, however, he did not work this past season.
Let's see how Van Pelt and McAdoo can turn things around.
