Patriots reporter may have just ruined Drake Maye's summer thanks to his report about former Tennessee QB Josh Dobbs

Drake Maye is unquestionably the New England Patriots' starting quarterback.

New head coach Mike Vrabel is counting on Maye to be "the guy" for years to come in Foxborough. The former North Carolina Tar Heels standout is incredibly talented and certainly possesses the skills to be a future star in the NFL.

The Josh Dobbs hype train, however, is going to be in full effect this summer in New England thanks to some recent reporting from the Boston Sports Journal's Greg Bedard.

Dobbs, a former Tennessee Vols quarterback who was signed by the Patriots this offseason to serve as the primary backup, outplayed Maye at OTAs on Wednesday according to Bedard.

"Dobbs clearly had the better day," said Bedard during an appearance on 98.5 The Sports Hub. "[Dobbs] made more plays down the field."

"He made a couple of plays down the field," added Bedard. "One to Kyle Williams, a couple to Javon Baker....He made plays down the field, Maye didn't really make many plays down the field."

Bedard was immediately aware that his report about Dobbs on a random OTA session in May was about to be turned into a headline.

"Don't go all Felger and Mazz on this that Josh Dobbs had a better day," said Bedard. "I know where you're going with that....Is Jimmy going to clip that and play it for the rest of the week?"

It really isn't a surprise that Dobbs had the better day. Bedard noted that the Patriots' offense wasn't running scripted plays on Wednesday, which means the quarterbacks were mostly ad-libbing -- which is when Dobbs is at his best.

Maye might be the more talented quarterback with the higher upside, but Dobbs is a veteran who has been in the league for nearly a decade. Of course he's going to be more comfortable in a May OTA session than a second year quarterback -- especially in this situation (it's Maye's first time playing under Vrabel while Dobbs has played under Vrabel before with the Tennessee Titans).

There's no quarterback controversy in New England, but that won't stop Dobbs from stealing headlines from Maye all summer thanks to Bedard's report.
