Patriots Rookie DE Keion White Impressive During OTAs

Having a clear need at the edge, the Patriots filled it nicely with White, who projects as a 5-technique defensive end. The ex-Yellow Jacket exhibits both physical size and athleticism. Though he should see most of his time at the five, he has the versatility move all over the defensive front. White is still considered a developmental talent as a pass-rush prospect. However, he can also be an immediate contributor against the run, provided he is placed on the edges. 

Still, White’s work ethic and willingness to learn has caught the eye of his teammates. In fact, team captain Ja’Whaun Bentley was particularly impressed by the rookie’s ability to learn what is known to be a complex Patriots defensive playbook. 

“The first thing that sticks out is his attention to detail. He picks things up quickly,” Bentley told reporters on Wednesday. 

Ultimately, what may set White apart from his peers is his aggressive play style. The 24-year-old’s fervor was on full display on Wednesday. Though such energy would ordinarily be an asset, White will likely have to lighten his foot from the accelerator — at least until passed practices begin in early August.  

As luck would have it, White is in the right place for his workman-like approach to the game. For a franchise which is known for its “Do Your Job” mantra, the Pats second-round rookie will find that style points count for little in New England. 

“I’m not big on the glitz and glamor of football. I want to work and I want to win and I feel that the Patriots are the same way … They [Patriots} are getting a player that always wants to improve. Someone who wants to get better every day.”

Simply put, it is all about winning in New England — and White seems to have already grasped the concept.
