The Patriots have made a running back swap ahead of their preseason opener. Hassan Haskins is now in the fold, while Myles Montgomery has been waived with an injury designation.
Haskins entered the league in 2022 as a fourth-round pick of Mike Vrabel‘s Titans. He made 15 appearances as a rookie but was sidelined the following year through injury. Haskins then spent two seasons with the Chargers, primarily playing on special teams during that span.
The Michigan product has averaged just three yards per attempt on 76 career carries. A depth role will be Haskins’ target upon reuniting with Vrabel and joining the defending AFC champions. A strong showing in training camp and New England’s preseason contests could at least lead to a spot on the team’s practice squad following roster cuts.
The Patriots’ backfield is set to once again be led by TreVeyon Henderson and Rhamondre Stevenson in 2026. The running back depth chart also includes Terrell Jennings, Lan Larison and Jam Miller at this time. As Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald notes, Montgomery had handled the smallest workload of New England’s running backs during training camp prior to being injured.
The undrafted rookie will now hit the waiver wire. Once he clears, Montgomery will revert to injured reserve. Players in his situation are generally released via an injury settlement, something which can result in playing time later in the year depending on their recovery timeline. In any case, Montgomery’s NFL debut in exhibition or regular-season action is likely to be delayed until 2026.
