Patriots Super Bowl Hero Lands College Coaching Gig

After playing eight seasons in the NFL, former New England Patriots running back James White is ready to pay it forward to the next generation. The three-time Super Bowl winner was named the assistant running back coach at Illinois on Thursday.

White played collegiately under current Illinois head coach Bret Bielema at Big Ten rival Wisconsin, where he racked up over 4,000 rushing yards and 48 total touchdowns in his career. Now, White will work alongside Bielema as the Fighting Illini look to build on last season's 10-3 record.

After his illustrious career at Wisconsin, New England drafted White in the fourth round (No. 130 overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft. Although White never topped 500 rushing yards in any of his eight NFL seasons, he thrived as one of quarterback Tom Brady's most trusted weapons in the short and intermediate passing game.

White's biggest moment came in Super Bowl LI, where New England famously overcame a 28-3 deficit against the Atlanta Falcons. White finished the contest with 14 receptions, 139 total yards, and three total touchdowns in New England's 34-28 overtime victory.

Now, White will look to pass his experience, knowledge of the game, and three-down skillset onto the Illinois running back room. If the past is any indication, he'll shatter expectations.
