Patriots Terminate Contract of Former 1,400-Yard Weapon

The New England Patriots released running back Hassan Haskins from the practice squad Monday, ending a brief second stint with the team just two weeks after he was added as depth, via the NFL transaction log.

The Patriots announced they signed first-year wide receiver Chandler Brayboy and rookie linebacker Xavier Holmes to the practice squad while cutting Haskins and safety Elliott Davison.

The moves came after New England placed wide receiver A.J. Brown on injured reserve and as the club continued to shape its depth chart following a season-opening loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Haskins, 26, signed with New England on Aug. 12, reuniting with head coach Mike Vrabel, who drafted him in the fourth round (No. 131 overall) out of Michigan for the Tennessee Titans in 2022.

The Patriots released him on Aug. 29 to make room after trading for running back Corey Kiner, then signed him to the practice squad two days later. He did not appear in the Week 1 game.

At Michigan, Haskins was a workhorse in 2021. He finished his final college season with 1,458 total yards — 1,327 rushing and 131 receiving — and 20 touchdowns across 14 games.

That production earned him first-team All-Big Ten and second-team All-America honors and helped the Wolverines reach the College Football Playoff.

The NFL has been a harder fit. Haskins played 15 games as a Titans rookie, missed the 2023 season with injury, then spent 2024 and 2025 with the Los Angeles Chargers after Tennessee waived him.

Career totals through 2025: 76 carries for 229 yards and two rushing touchdowns, plus 18 receptions for 119 yards and one receiving score. He has also returned kickoffs. In 2025, he appeared in 12 games for the Chargers and rushed 17 times for 47 yards.

New England’s backfield is crowded. TreVeyon Henderson and Rhamondre Stevenson sit atop the depth chart, with Kiner and practice-squad back Lan Larison also in the mix.

Haskins’ size (6-foot-2, 228 pounds) and special-teams background made him a reasonable depth option, but the Patriots opted for more help at receiver and on the edge after Brown’s injury. Brayboy is an undrafted receiver with return experience; Holmes is a young pass rusher from James Madison.

Haskins is now a free agent and can sign with another club.

For a former All-American who once piled up nearly 1,500 yards from scrimmage in a single college season, the next stop will again be a fight for a roster or practice-squad role.

The Patriots’ practice squad now lists Larison as its only running back.
