The New England Patriots aim to make a significant leap forward in 2025. Following a disappointing 2024 season that concluded with a 4-13 record and a change at the head coaching position, the Patriots aim to contend for a playoff spot in a competitive AFC. It’s not impossible, but improvements need to be made across the board.
The front office sought to improve the offensive line and at the skill positions throughout free agency and the draft, as well as on defense, and now the team enters the 2025 season with an opportunity to cause a stir. However, they could make another significant move to help second-year quarterback Drake Maye.
Per Douglas Fritz of ClutchPoints, the Patriots could be in the mix to make the perfect offer for disgruntled 49ers’ wide receiver Jauan Jennings. The former seventh-round pick had a breakout year in 2024, catching 77 passes for 975 yards and six touchdowns, and recently made it clear that he’d like an extension or to be traded. The Patriots could pounce.
“So what would the Patriots have to give up? First, the 49ers aren’t overly deep at the receiver position. And Jennings is slotted in as their No. 2 guy. So the Patriots would likely have to send back a receiver. And Hollins is the only receiver with size (6-foot-4, 221 pounds) who could replace Jennings.” Fritz writes.
The Patriots signed former Buffalo Bills receiver Mack Hollins in free agency, hoping that the playmaker could help as a pass-catcher and run-blocker, giving the Patriots some ruggedness. However, he could be on the move in this scenario.
“It doesn’t make sense that the 49ers would want the journeyman Hollins, unless they got their socks knocked off with a draft pick. So, for this deal to work, the Patriots would have to send Hollins and a second-round pick.” Fritz adds.
On the surface, that’s a huge offer. A second-round pick is a significant amount of draft capital to spend, and something of that ilk might have the Patriots reconsidering. However, the 49ers likely have no intention of trading a receiver vital to the offense's strength in 2024.
If the Patriots were to land Jennings, they’d have to give him an extension, but they’d also get a quality receiver who could help the offense from day one.
