'People don't know this' - Brian Schottenheimer reveals something about Joe Milton that makes Cowboys QB very special

If there's one thing Dak Prescott is praised for, other than his leadership, it's the fact that he has his technique down to a T. NFL analyst Nate Tice from Yahoo! Sports has described the Dallas Cowboys quarterback as a robot for years now because his throwing mechanics always look consistent and well-polished.

But now, ahead of Prescott's tenth year in the NFL, he has a teammate so knowledgeable about the game that he's not afraid of correcting the $60 million per year quarterback: Backup Joe Milton.

"It’s fun because people don’t know this, Joe’s kind of a nerd when it comes to throwing mechanics, in a good way," Schottenheimer told reporters Sunday. "That’s not a bad thing. He’s very well-coached, and he understands mechanics. I love when he gives Dak little corrections, like, 'Hey, watch your front shoulder there,' and Dak’s like, 'Yeah, I see it.' It’s really cool."

Now, granted, most of the teaching is being done the other way around. After all, this will be Milton's second year in the NFL. But it's still encouraging to hear this about the young quarterback. When it comes to the former Tennessee Vol, everyone knows about the rocket arm that's earned him the "Bazooka Joe" moniker. To learn that his game is more than just freak-like talent is encouraging. Even as a backup, Milton is using that "nerd" approach as a way to lead, too.

"This is a guy who, during the offseason—while we were on break—was having guys over to his house and going through the installs with them," Schottenheimer added. "You don’t see that often. I’ve been around a long time, and you don’t see a lot of second-year quarterbacks doing that—inviting young guys over and walking through the playbook with them."

The next month will be crucial for Milton as he's expected to play almost every offensive snap of the Cowboys' three preseason games. It's no secret that his game is rough around the edges. The accuracy, touch, and consistency must improve. But like with Trey Lance over the last couple of years, the Dallas coaching staff knows he needs reps to do that.

For now, Milton is impressing coaches on and off the field and appears to be locked in at QB2 on the depth chart going into the season.
