PFF puts second-round defender as the Packers' best draft pick
Tork Mason-USA TODAY NETWORK

Versatility and athletic ability were two main attributes in the Green Bay Packers' draft class. And that theme was a big reason for Trevor Sikkema, PFF's lead draft analyst , to choose safety Javon Bullard as the Packers' best pick of the year.

"Bullard was one of my favorite players in the class, so I had a feeling I would like wherever he ended up," Sikkema wrote. "But in Green Bay, he can maximize his versatility. Jaire Alexander is a stud cornerback who can really lock down receivers in the slot, but now so can Bullard. Getting Bullard in the mix as a slot defender can free up Alexander to shadow the opposing team's best receiver, depending on what the matchup is that week."

That's an interesting perspective, because Bullard can actually be a nickel corner and fight for a starting job with Keisean Nixon. Meanwhile, the other two safety picks, Evan Williams and Kitan Olapado, can play alongside free agent addition Xavier McKinney as real safeties.

But Williams, for example, is also a versatile player — he can play in the slot, as well, and as a dime linebacker.

Packers new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley knows Javon Bullard really well. It was Hafley who recruited Bullard to Boston College.

"Just loved his tape. Loved the way he played. Loved the play style. Loved the versatility. He’s a physical guy. He can run, he can cover, he can play deep, he can play in the slot, he can blitz," Hafley said. "He's bigger when you see him. Have you seen him yet? He's thick. Strong. The best part about it, and I kind of said the same thing about X (Xavier McKinney), is you don't really know what you're getting until you get into the meeting room with them. I mean, he's a sharp guy. His ability to learn and process in those two days (rookie minicamp) was impressive."

The Packers' safety room got significantly more talented and intriguing after the draft. Beyond McKinney and the three drafted players, the roster has last year's seventh-round pick Anthony Johnson Jr., Benny Sapp III, plus special teamers Zayne Anderson and Tyler Coyle.
