It can be tough to sort out one dynasty from another.
Pro Football Focus recently unveiled its All-PFF Team of the last 25 years, a comprehensive look at the best NFL players of the last quarter-century. Given the Kansas City Chiefs’ run of recent dominance and collection of household names, it’s no surprise to see some representation on the list. It’s also hard not to feel like there were some glaring omissions.
Wide receiver Tyreek Hill is the lone (former) Chief to make PFF's starting roster, earning the nod at one of the most stacked positions to judge. His inclusion alongside Julio Jones and Antonio Brown makes sense given Hill’s truly elite skill set—one that allows him to dominate even elite athletes at the professional level.
Over his six seasons with Kansas City, Hill earned Pro Bowl honors every year and went from a dynamic gadget player to an elite, well-rounded WR1. Even now, he remains one of the NFL’s most dangerous weapons with the Miami Dolphins. Hill's average season with the Chiefs featured 80 catches, 1,105 receiving yards, and 9 touchdowns.
While the list ends there in terms of Chiefs starters, per PFF's list, two more future members of the team's Ring of Honor earned honorable mentions.
Mitchell Schwartz was recognized at right tackle, behind Lane Johnson of the Philadelphia Eagles. Schwartz anchored the Chiefs' offensive line on the right side for five seasons and was named an All-Pro for four of those years. The consummate technician, Schwartz was the NFL's ironman and the Chiefs' best tackle since Andy Reid took over as head coach.
A six-time Pro Bowler, Chris Jones was also listed as an honorable mention at defensive tackle behind Aaron Donald and Ndamukong Suh. While Donald was a lock for the top spot, it’s fair to argue that Jones' disruption and postseason dominance over the last several seasons could have tipped the scales in his favor for a starting spot.
The biggest question remaining when reading the list is: "where is Patrick Mahomes?" The Chiefs star quarterback didn’t even earn an honorable mention behind winner Tom Brady and runner-up Peyton Manning.
Despite still being under 30 years of age, Mahomes is already known as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. He's earned three Super Bowl wins (while taking home the MVP trophy every time), with an all-time record of 17-4 in the postseason. He's won two regular-season MVP awards and has been named to six Pro Bowl rosters. He’s already rewritten the record books in numerous categories and has shown no signs of slowing down. T
The omission of Mahomes might make sense through a current 25-year lens, because obviously Manning deserves his due as well, but there's no questioning Mahomes' historic run either. And the fact that the Chiefs are the only other dynasty in that span of time (alongside Brady's run with the New England Patriots), the Chiefs quarterback deserved a nod of some kind.
