PFSN: 49ers poised for playoff return during 2025 season
Darren Yamashita-USA TODAY Sports

Cameron Sheath of Pro Football and Sports Network (PFSN) recently ranked the 18 NFL teams that missed the playoffs in 2024 based on their chances of returning in 2025. The San Francisco 49ers landed at No. 2 on the list, trailing only the Cincinnati Bengals.

The 49ers entered the 2024 season with lofty expectations after a Super Bowl appearance but fell well short, finishing 6-11 and missing the postseason for the first time since 2020.

49ers roster overhaul and youth movement

This offseason brought significant roster changes as San Francisco parted ways with several veteran players and reloaded with rookies in preparation for the financial impact of quarterback Brock Purdy's upcoming contract extension. Over the past two drafts, the 49ers have added 19 players, many of whom will be counted on to fill the void left by key offseason departures.

"The 49ers' high ranking on this list may raise some eyebrows after their dismal display in 2024," Sheath noted. "The 2023 NFC champions, though, have a dream schedule this coming season. Like their NFC West rivals, they face games against both the AFC South and NFC South."

Easiest schedule in the NFL

After finishing last in the NFC West, San Francisco now owns the easiest schedule in the NFL based on 2024 results. The team will face just three playoff squads from last season—the Los Angeles Rams (twice), the Houston Texans, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"While single games against NFC North, AFC North, and NFC East opposition sound dreadful, though, their fourth-place finish last year has served them well," Sheath added. "While their rivals face three tough games, the 49ers face games against the Bears, Browns, and Giants."

Health is key for a 49ers turnaround

Injuries were a major factor in last year's struggles, with Purdy missing several of his top offensive weapons, including running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, for extended stretches.

McCaffrey has been healthy throughout the offseason, and Aiyuk is expected to return at some point during the 2025 campaign.

"The expected return of Christian McCaffrey should have a huge effect on the offense, but high-profile exits will take their toll," Sheath wrote. "Overall, though, San Francisco still boasts some of the best players in the game on both sides of the ball and is expected to return to winning ways in 2025."
