Philadelphia Eagles Make Decision On Matt Patricia After Defensive Collapse In Week 17
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Eagles had an embarrassing collapse in week 17 against the Cardinals. After being up 21-6 at the half, the defense surrendered 29 points in the second half. The offense stalled and the Eagles ended up losing. The defense has been a problem all season so the team made a change in defensive playcalling. Matt Patricia would now be calling the plays. After the game, head coach Nick Sirianni revealed his decision on Patricia moving forward.

Philadelphia Eagles Make Decision On Matt Patricia

Sirianni is sticking with his decision to promote Patricia saying this in his postgame interview.

“Everything that I do, every decision that I make is with the thought of the team first and what is best for the team. The adjustments that I made a couple weeks ago were in attempt to do what’s best for the team. I still believe that.”

Sirianni is sticking with it but it hasn’t looked good. On Sunday, they gave up 449 total yards, 221 rushing yards and gave up 32 first downs. This is not going to translate into playoff success when you have to stop some of the best offenses in the league.

Can The Eagles Recover?

The bones of last year’s Super Bowl team are there but there are some gaping holes. Their linebackers are atrocious and even the best defensive play caller wouldn’t be able to hide some of their deficiencies. The secondary has had injuries and receivers are able to run free. While the pass rush is scary at times, they also struggle to stop the run which is what the Cardinals exploited on Sunday. The Patricia piece is strange as he has proven that he isn’t the best defensive coach but there are more problems than just the coach.

Can the Philadelphia Eagles fix some things before the playoffs? They are running out of time as the quest for another Super Bowl appearance begins in a couple of weeks.
