The Philadelphia Eagles are moving on from a former undrafted free agent whom they took a chance on in 2023.

The team announced on Friday that they have released cornerback Eli Ricks from the practice squad, among several other roster moves.

Ricks originally joined the Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2023 after playing college ball at LSU and Alabama. Following a strong training camp and preseason, Ricks ultimately earned himself a spot on the Eagles’ 53-man roster. As a rookie, he appeared in 16 games, recording 19 total tackles (including one for loss) and three passes defended.

His numbers took a dip last fall, mainly due to the fact that the Birds targeted their secondary needs and drafted cornerbacks Cooper DeJean and Mitchell ahead of the 2024 season. Ricks played in just seven games, primarily contributing on special teams, and finished the year with two tackles.

He had the chance to see more action this fall with Darius Slay out of the picture, but he just didn't do enough to impress the coaches. It's a bummer considering Ricks was having a decent training camp, though he wasn't consistent. The good news is that his career is far from over, and another team could ultimately benefit from his defensive and special teams skills.

In addition to releasing Ricks, the Eagles also let go of veteran wide receiver Terrace Marshall. They made these two moves to make room for running back Audric Estime and cornerback Ambry Thomas.

The Eagles kick off their first regular-season game against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday Night Football next week. Fans can expect more moves to be made between now and then as the team looks to perfect its roster for the season.

It is worth mentioning that the Eagles still do not have their starting CB2 situation figured out, but right now, it's between Adoree' Jackson and Jakorian Bennett.
