The Philadelphia Eagles received some tough news this week that’ll test their pass rush depth. Outside Linebacker Nolan Smith has been placed on injured reserve after aggravating a triceps injury that’s been bothering him since the Super Bowl championship run. How will the champs fare without him?

Smith’s triceps problems date back to February, when he underwent surgery just a week after the Eagles’ Super Bowl victory over Kansas City. The 24-year-old edge rusher thought he’d put those issues behind him, but Sunday’s win against the Rams proved otherwise. What started as optimism quickly turned into frustration as Smith reaggravated the same triceps that required offseason surgery.
Here’s the kicker – this isn’t a new injury requiring another trip to the operating room. According to league sources, Smith won’t need surgery this time around. The Eagles are taking a conservative approach, allowing their young pass rusher to rest and recover properly rather than risk further damage.
The IR designation means Smith must miss at least four games, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Eagles expect him to be sidelined through their November 2 bye week. If that timeline holds, Smith would return for the Monday Night Football showdown against Green Bay on November 10– a primetime stage that could showcase his full recovery.
The timing stings for Philadelphia, especially considering how Smith was finding his groove in the defensive system. While he hadn’t recorded a sack through three games, his eight quarterback pressures ranked second on the team behind rookie Jalyx Hunt. Those numbers don’t tell the whole story of a player who was clearly growing into his expanded role.
Smith’s absence creates an interesting puzzle for Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio. The Eagles entered the season expecting Smith to be their primary edge rusher following the departures of veteran Brandon Graham and Josh Sweat. Now they’ll lean heavily on their depth chart.
Hunt gets the biggest opportunity here. The rookie has already shown flashes of his potential, leading the team in quarterback pressures. Za’Darius Smith, the veteran acquisition, brings experience and proven production to help fill the void. Joshua Uche adds another dimension to the rotation, giving the Eagles multiple options to generate pressure.
The Eagles also have Ogbo Okoronkwo, Patrick Johnson, and Azeez Ojulari on the roster, though the latter two have been inactive for all three games this season. Don’t be surprised if we see more of Johnson, who has already seen action against the Cowboys and Chiefs.
Philadelphia didn’t waste time addressing its roster needs. Safety Marcus Epps, who was a key contributor during the Eagles’ 2022 Super Bowl run, gets promoted from the practice squad. Tight end Cameron Latu and Cornerback Parry Nickerson also earned spots on the 53-man roster.
The practice squad additions include a familiar face in Quez Watkins, the former Eagles receiver who caught 98 passes for 1,249 yards and 6 touchdowns during his four seasons in Philadelphia. It is a reunion that could pay dividends if the Eagles need receiver depth down the stretch.
While losing Smith hurts, the Eagles’ defensive depth should keep them competitive. Hunt’s emergence as a legitimate pass-rushing threat gives them a foundation to build on. Za’Darius Smith’s veteran presence provides stability, and the return of Epps adds another layer of experience to the secondary.
The conservative approach to Smith’s injury also signals the Eagles’ long-term thinking. Rather than rushing back a player who showed tremendous promise in last year’s playoff run, including a franchise-record 4.0 sacks in the postseason, they are prioritizing his health for what they hope will be another deep playoff push.
Smith’s journey from Georgia standout to Eagles edge rusher has had its bumps, but his talent remains undeniable. The 30th overall pick in the 2023 draft showed flashes of brilliance with 6.5 sacks during his rookie regular season before exploding in the playoffs.
This setback, while frustrating, gives other players chances to step up and gives Smith time to fully recover from an injury that’s lingered too long. When he returns after the bye week, expect a motivated player ready to make up for lost time.
The Eagles sit at 3-0 heading into their matchup with Tampa Bay, and their depth will be tested over the coming weeks. But if this team’s championship run taught us anything, it’s that next-man-up mentality can lead to special things in Philadelphia.
