The Philadelphia Eagles' No. 3 wide receiver spot is wide open heading into training camp, though they might have their answer in a player they signed last season.
ESPN recently named under-the-radar players from all 32 teams this offseason, and for Philly, that player was wide receiver Danny Gray.
Here's what ESPN had to say about Gray's progression throughout OTAs and minicamp so far:
The 26-year-old wideout made an impression during the OTA and minicamp practices open to reporters, using his 4.33 speed to stretch the field and accelerate past defenders on catches over the middle. Gray was a third-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2022. He dealt with some injuries and tallied just one reception during his time in San Francisco.
He was waived by the Niners in August and signed with the Eagles' practice squad days later. Philadelphia has one of the top receiving duos in the league in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, but there are some roster spots up for grabs lower on the depth chart. Gray will be competing with players like Ainias Smith, Avery Williams and Terrace Marshall during training camp. -- Tim McManus
Gray saw action in 13 games as a rookie with the niners, finishing the season with just one catch for 10 yards. He then joined the Eagles last Septemeber and signed a futures/reserve contract with the team in February.
While his production has been minimal so far, Gray’s elite speed is keeping him firmly in the wide receiver room competition, not just for a roster spot, but for a potential role in the offense as a deep threat for Hurts.
On top of that, if Gray can flash his explosiveness in the return game, the former SMU standout could very well earn a spot on special teams as well.
Gray will certaintly be a name to watch when the Eagles report to NFL training camp on Tuesday, July 22.
