Philadelphia Eagles sign running back who has a lot to prove this offseason

The Philadelphia Eagles added some depth to their already stacked running back room on Friday.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Eagles claimed Keilan Robinson off waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars.

"Free agent RB Keilan Robinson claimed by the #Eagles, per source. Jaguars released former fifth-rounder earlier this week," Fowler wrote on X/Twitter.

Robinson, a 5-foot-8, 191-pound running back from Washington, D.C., was originally selected by the Jaguars in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, taken 167th overall out of Texas.

The 25-year-old appeared in the final six games of his rookie season, contributing primarily on special teams with two kickoff returns. He logged five snaps on offense and 51 on special teams, returning two kickoffs for a total of 34 yards.

Before making the jump to the NFL, Robinson started out his college career at Alabama before transferring to Texas in 2021, where he really found his groove as a return specialist. During his three seasons with the Longhorns, Robinson made his mark, ranking eighth all-time in kickoff return average (24.2 yards) and ninth in total return yards (897). In 2022, the coaches gave him an honorable mention nod on the All-Big 12 team.

Robinson will face an uphill climb as he tries to earn a place on the Eagles' 53-man roster this offseason, starting next week at mandatory minicamp.

The running back room in Philly is already packed, headlined by star veteran Saquon Barkley, power back A.J. Dillon, and rookie Will Shipley, all of whom are considered roster locks heading into training camp. That leaves just one or two potential spots up for grabs, with Robinson set to compete against Avery Williams, Lew Nichols, and others for a depth role or possibly a spot on the practice squad if he can prove himself.

While his path to earning a place in Philly won't be easy, his special teams experience will be key, considering the Eagles love versatility.
