Picking the best Round 3 draft target for the Cowboys ahead of the 2024 NFL Combine
Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

So far, we've looked into the Dallas Cowboys' best draft target for Round 1 and Round 2 of the 2024 NFL Draft ahead of this week's scouting combine. This is how they look like thus far:

  • Round 1: OL Troy Fautanu, Washington
  • Round 2: LB Edgerrin Cooper, Texas A&M

Now it's time to dive into Round 3, where I have the Cowboys addressing a top need at a spot where value could be optimal.

The Cowboys should take Wisconsin RB Braelon Allen with what should be the 87th pick in the draft

Allen is A to Z Sports' Destin Adams RB1 and it's not hard to see why. Per The Athletic's Dane Brugler, 69.5% of Allen's yards came after contact. This is a true playmaker who could excellent for the Cowboys even behind non-elite run blocking or scheming.

Particularly so because he shows a knack for exploding through the designated hole thanks to his patience behind the offensive line and blast through defenders with downhill explosiveness. He had five games with at least three explosive runs (10+ yards) in 2023, per PFF. Allen dealt most of his damage from zone concepts, which would fit with what the Cowboys like to do on their running game.

My colleague Travis May mocked Allen to the Cowboys as early as the second round early in February on a three-round mock. Getting him in the third is definitely possible though, considering Allen ranks 87th per the consensus board.

Cowboys need to build RB room from the ground up

The truth is this year's draft class will present many quality running backs starting in Day 2 and the Cowboys will need to pick their favorite flavor and work with what's available. But what we do know is the RB room needs to be rebuilt with Tony Pollard hitting free agency and the best way to go about it would be drafting somebody in the middle rounds.

Additionally, the Cowboys should look into adding a veteran free agent to complement the rookie and round out the squad with Rico Dowdle or maybe even Deuce Vaughn despite a complicated rookie year.

Final word

Getting somebody like Allen would be great for a Cowboys team needing to rebuild its RB room the right way. If Pollard does return for another year in Dallas, it will take a significantly cheaper deal than what's expected. Even then, the front office would be smart to look into boosting the RB committee with a rookie.
