The Pittsburgh Steelers had a couple of concerning updates on Wednesday's injury report.
As the team prepares for its rubber match vs. the division rival Ravens this weekend, one of the most important players on Pittsburgh's roster did not participate in practice because he was sick.
Per the Steelers, Pro Bowl kicker Chris Boswell was a DNP for Wednesday's outdoor session at Acrisure Stadium due to illness. He's the second player to miss practice this week along with veteran defensive star Cameron Heyward who's also fighting off symptoms.
Boswell has been one of the steadiest kickers in the NFL this season, hitting on a league-high 41-of-44 field goal attempts, while also knocking home all 35 of his extra points.
The timing couldn't be worse for the Steelers, who enter Jan. 11's Wild Card a 9.5-point underdog. Few are giving the Steelers much of a chance against Lamar Jackson and Co. after suffering four straight losses to end the season.
One option head coach Mike Tomlin is considering is utilizing Justin Fields more. Something both he and the former Bears QB talked about in the lead-up to Saturday's game.
"I think for me, just being able to utilize with my legs and stuff, that causes the defense to watch film on that, really just waste time on it whether we're planning on running it or not," Fields told Steelers.com. "So, I think it's definitely a plus for us."
"I'm certainly open to utilizing Justin," Tomlin added. "He has an awesome skill set. We've done some of that in the past. We've done less of it in recent weeks. He experienced an injury a couple of weeks back that slowed some of that."
"But certainly, in an effort to win this game, I am open to any combination or combinations of the division of labor in an effort to do so, and so I'm certainly open to that as we develop plans this week."
Wide receiver Roman Wilson (hamstring), cornerback Donte Jackson (back), linebacker Cole Holcomb (knee), defensive lineman Logan Lee (calf) and offensive tackle Calvin Anderson (groin) were all full participants in the team's midweek practice.
