There was a deafening silence in the in the more than one month before Aaron Rodgers’ signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers became official to the point that the team and Omar Khan were perceived as the camp that was too desperate and begging the former Green Bay Packers star.
Even organization legend Ben Roethlisberger lost his patience and called out the team for not saying anything about their interest on A-Rod and the latter not saying anything.
“At some point, you have to say, ‘What’s best for our team is to just probably move on.’ And that might sound crazy because it’s Aaron Rodgers, but at some point you start to question, ‘Does Aaron really want to play?'” Big Ben said in his podcast.
Rodgers cleared in May that he stepped away from football-related matters for a bit due to personal issues, including attending to a friend who got struck by cancer.
However, he also cleared that his communication with Pittsburgh never died since their interest was floated on the media around two months ago.
They completed the deal on June 6 after he agreed to a one-year $13 million deal. He has been busy preparing for the season with new teammates since then.
Another silence called out recently is that of the team officials. General manager Khan is finally speaking up.
He specifically addressed criticisms over their perceived exaggerated patience on A-Rod.
Khan said they were very firm that the deal will happen and them waiting on him is a sign of strength.
“Some people might view my patience or our patience as a weakness, but we view it as a strength and we just felt good about it,” he said.
“If there was a point where we didn’t think we would end up where we wanted to end up, then we would have gone in a different direction. We felt comfortable and good about it. We wanted Aaron Rodgers, and Aaron Rodgers wanted to be a Steeler, and it worked out.”
