For the second consecutive week, Justin Fields will get the start under center. Wilson continues be sidelined by the calf injury he first sustained during training camp and flared up again just days before last Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons. Wilson was listed as questionable which according to head coach Mike Tomlin, meant in all likelihood he would not play.
“Regarding Russell’s availability, I’m going to list him as questionable,” Tomlin said Friday. “So, obviously if his availability is questionable, then starting is less so. But we’ve been in that mindset all week. Like I’ve said, we’ve been focused on getting Justin ready to play and we’ll continue in that mindset as we push forward toward game time.”
With Wilson out, that means there will be no revenge game as the Broncos released him in the offseason just two years into his five-year, $242.5 million deal. Wilson got more work in during this week as he inches closer to a comeback.
“It was good,” Wilson said. “Just an opportunity to go out there and work. I have another opportunity tomorrow. That is what I am focused on. So, it will be good. I take it as it comes. It’s up to the coaches. All I can do is focus on tomorrow. Just focus on that and be good.
“I have been working a lot, trying to get back into it. Even the moment I got hurt, I felt like I could find a way to push through it and come back that same week and practice the next day. So, that’s just my mindset.”
