Pittsburgh Steelers just missed their best chance to fill a major offensive hole following AFC foe's free agent acquisition

While the Pittsburgh Steelers made some major waves during the prime of 2026 NFL free agency, they weren't immune to losses. Look no further than Calvin Austin III, running back Kenny Gainwell, and of course, left guard Isaac Seumalo.

Well, you could argue that the Steelers upgraded over Austin and Gainwell with the additions of Michael Pittman Jr. and Rico Dowdle. However, no moves have been made to fill Seumalo's spot, and argubly the best option available is now off the board.

OG Wyatt Teller signs with Houston Texans

Teller is in his prime at 31 years old, is a 3x Pro Bowler and was arguably the best remaining free agent on the market before Houston scooped him up. He signed a two-year deal at $16 million with a maximum value of $23 million. Maybe that priced the Steelers out of the running, but paying $8 million a year ($2 million less than what the Arizona Cardinals gave Seumalo) for what would immediately become the most proven starter on the team doesn't seem like a big swing to me.

The Steelers still, even after all of their moves, have $22 million in cap space. Perhaps not making this move or signing any other guard on the market shows Pittsburgh's confidence in Spencer Anderson, who filled in nicely for Seumalo in some games and was integral to the team's heavy personnel package.

Or, perhaps the team takes a page out of my latest 7-round mock draft for the Steelers, where I gave Pittsburgh a Penn State product who I would argue is the best offensive lineman and certainly the best interior offensive lineman in the class.

Are the Steelers banking on the draft to find a starting guard?

The best remaining free agents at guard are over 34 years old, via Joel Bitonio and Kevin Zeitler. I would rather see Anderson get a shot as a full-time starter than go down that avenue, but whether it's Vega Ioane, Chase Bisontis, or even a late-round dart throw like Parker Brailsford, the Steelers may be waiting until April to find their starting left guard for September.
