The Pittsburgh Steelers desperately need a starting quarterback.
They had their choice of every quarterback not named Cam Ward, and still they passed.
Now, it may cost them.
Look, Derrick Harmon is a good player. In fact, the Steelers think he can be their next Cam Heyward. He has the makeup of 10 10-year pro who quietly racks up Pro Bowls and is a franchise figurehead for years to come.
But Shedeur Sanders was on the board. As were Jaxson Dart and Jalen Milroe. Last I checked Omar Khan said the team would go to camp with four quarterbacks. Right now they only have two, and even worse, those two are Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson.
So this pick means two things. First, the Steelers have to believe Aaron Rodgers is coming. I don't care what they say about Mason Rudolph and how confident they are, they know T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward, and Minkah Fitzpatrick are not going to want Rudolph as their starter.
The second thing it means, is that Mike Tomlin got outbid. Tomlin was the one who wanted Sanders. Tomlin is the reason that we got all the reports that the meeting went well.
And yet, the front office and Art Rooney won out.
Perhaps it's a changing of the tide. Here's more on Harmon...
Derrick Harmon, DL, Oregon
Age: 21 years old (08/03/2003)
A to Z Sports Expected Draft Position: 25
Pre-Draft Round Projection: Round 1
Derrick Harmon has everything you want from a modern defensive tackle. Sure, he shows the ability to play up and down the defensive line, but his combination of size and strength lends his services best utilized near the center. He's stiffer than you would like, and he may not play in wider defensive line alignments on an every-down basis. Instead, you plug him squarely over the ball and dare teams to try and move him in the run game. It takes an army. And it won't be easy for any center-guard combo to wall him off. Should he develop his pass rush plan a bit and drop some weight to become more agile, then he could be utilized similarly to his time in college as a versatile lineman. For now, though, he's a day one starter at the defensive tackle position with immediate impact in the run game.
Career Projection: Immediate quality starter
