The Pittsburgh Steelers are looking to be a dominant force on the offensive side of the football after adding quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver DK Metcalf this offseason. However, there will be one star player who is not going to be on the roster. Let’s take a deeper dive into who the Pittsburgh Steelers released from their roster and what it means for them going forward.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are in a position where they are looking to win now and decided to move on from a former four-time All-Pro and Super Bowl champion. Cordarrelle Patterson posted the breaking news himself while referencing Friday about being fired on his day off.

Patterson is 34 years old and it appears that this was a decision made by the front office and not him requesting to be released. Patterson joined the Steelers in 2024 and played in 13 games as he finished with 32 rushing attempts for 135 yards (4.2 yards per attempt) but did not find the end zone on the ground while also having 12 receptions on 14 targets for 80 yards (6.7 yards per catch) with a receiving touchdown last season. Patterson was on the final season of a two-year, $6 million deal and has a dead cap hit of $950,000 for the Pittsburgh Steelers this season.
While Patterson is not the player he used to be, he can still be a valuable piece to an offense after coming with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith from the Atlanta Falcons ahead of the 2024 season. The Steelers now have Jaylen Warren, rookie Kaleb Johnson, Kenneth Gainwell, Trey Sermon, and Evan Hill competing for running back snaps this preseason.
