The Pittsburgh Steelers were recently eliminated from the NFL playoffs by the Baltimore Ravens. Going one-and-done in the playoffs is already a difficult way to end a season, but it likely feels worse when a division rival is responsible.

The loss puts Pittsburgh in an interesting position, as they are now forced to evaluate their quarterback situation following the 2024 season. Should they keep Russell Wilson despite his age? Is Justin Fields prepared to be the full time starter?

Those are among the top questions the Steelers will need to answer in the offseason, but they've already added another quarterback to the roster, just days after being eliminated from the playoffs.

According to his representatives, quarterback Skylar Thompson has signed a futures contract with the Steelers. He joins Wilson, Fields and Kyle Allen as quarterbacks on Pittsburgh's current 90-man roster.

Wilson, Fields and Allen will all become free agents in March, and the Steelers will need to choose how to handle the future at the position. Wilson will turn 37 during the 2025 season, and the Steelers may not want to commit to an older quarterback.

Fields played well while Wilson was injured this season, but Wilson's play elevated the team to a different level when he became the starter. We'll see if the Steelers have enough confidence in the former first-round pick to commit to a long-term contract.

Thompson will join the Steelers after spending his first three seasons with the Miami Dolphins. The former Kansas State Wildcat was selected in the seventh round back in 2022, and made three starts as a rookie. He started the Dolphins' playoff game that year, losing to the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card round.

He appeared in three games once again this season, making one start after Tua Tagovailoa's concussion against the Buffalo Bills in Week 2.

The Steelers reportedly plan to bring back head coach Mike Tomlin for another season in 2025. With Thompson added as an additional option at quarterback, we'll see when they eventually make a choice on Fields and Wilson during the course of the NFL's offseason.
