Pittsburgh Steelers Stock Watch: Players with the most ground to make up ahead of 2025 training camp

The final stretch without NFL football is upon is.

Pretty soon, all eyes will be focused on training camp in a little over a month, and the Pittsburgh Steelers will be atop the marquee.

But now is the time to value the stock of the team, and look at which members are looking to gain momentum when the reps really count.

Bears

QBs not named Aaron Rodgers

Maybe it was just fool's gold or people talking themselves into Mason Rudolph and Will Howard, but there was a contingent of Steelers fans, media and brass that would have been ok with saying let's roll with this group if there is no Aaron Rodgers.

Mason Rudolph would have been the most obvious beneficiary, but Will Howard could have played himself up the depth chart with a solid camp and preseason. Now, barring another injury to Rodgers, none will see the light of day in the starting lineup, which is obviously the Steelers' plan in an ideal scenario.

RB Jaylen Warren

Let me be clear here, for one, nothing actually matters until training camp comes, and second, whenever the Steelers release ther first depth chart of the season, Warren is still likely to be atop the RB room.

But the RB receiving all the praise not just from the media but from the coaching staff, was rookie Kaleb Johnson. Size, instincts, fluidity, scheme fit, you name it, everything has been on display.

So much so, that when asked point blank if Warren was the Steelers' running back one, OC Arthur Smith deflected to Latrobe, saying that would be determined when they got to training camp.

Don't expect Warren to go easy, and I think he will show his best with a rookie hot on his heels.

WR Roman Wilson

When OTAs started a few weeks ago, everyone was excited to see a new Roman Wilson. One that built himself up and looks to be a contributor in 2025. But when asked about the state of the WR corps, coach Zach Azzanni didn't exactly inspire a ton of confidence in Wilson as anything more than a number three.

Instead, he emphatically declared Calvin Austin III the WR #2 behind DK Metcalf (of which he has earned) before saying that everyone else is battling for a spot in a by-committee approach.

Again, the real stuff matters next month. But between the team signing Robert Woods, Calvin Austin III being the number two, and plenty of reports that Pittsburgh is still trying to trade for another playmaker, I think Pittsburgh is telling you they have to see it before they believe it with Roman Wilson.
