Potential surprise starter explains why he's on the rise in his first year with the Cowboys

Though it was mostly flying under the radar before the Dallas Cowboys arrived at Oxnard, California, linebacker is quickly becoming one of the most exciting position battles of training camp.

We're only two practices into camp but already it's clear competition is fierce. Free agent signing Jack Sanborn stole most of the headlines during the offseason but he's clearly receiving competition from another veteran newcomer for the middle linebacker job: Former first-round pick Kenneth Murray.

Murray has been running with the first-team defense a lot so far and Brian Schottenheimer had praise for him when talking to the media on Wednesday. After practice, Murray explained why he's on the rise in Dallas when asked what's he wanted to bring to the defense.

"I’m just a complete package," Murray confidently told reporters. "I feel like my game is everything—run game, pass rush, pass coverage. I think I can do it all pretty well. I just want to come out here and be the leader in the middle, make sure I connect the front end and the back end, and just fly around and make plays. I think that’s what I do best—finding the ball and flying around."

Though Murray didn't listen to Schottenheimer hours before it was his turn to do media work, the Cowboys head coach also praised his versatility.

"Size, power, ability to tackle—wrap up, get guys to the ground, he’s a very good blitzer." Schottenheimer said when asked about the player he nicknames K9.  "The leadership he possesses. He’s a grown-ass man out there. He takes charge. He makes a lot of the checks, he’s very smart, and he’s wearing the green dot for us in a lot of the things we’re doing."

In addition to Sanborn—who appears to be his primary competition for the middle linebacker job—Murray is joining a group expected to start Marist Liufau on defense and DeMarvion Overshown once the latter returns from injury. As a former first-round draft pick that hasn't lived up to the expectations set on him back in 2020, Murray landed in the right spot, as he describes Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus as a "linebacker guru."

"He’s a linebacker guru," Murray said. "Every day I’m able to pick up a little nugget from him. He’s super focused on the details—hard on the linebackers, always with us. He’s in the back of the room every day, giving us little nuggets and insights. So every day, I’m just trying to learn something new."
