Preseason loss to Bears confirms bleak Browns QB outlook

The Cleveland Browns are proving doubters right.

On Saturday, quarterbacks Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders underwhelmed in a 34-10 preseason Week 1 loss to the Chicago Bears.

Watson, entering the final year of his onerous five-year, fully-guaranteed $230 million contract, was an efficient 11-of-15 for 126 yards but also lost a fumble on his lone sack. Sanders wasn't any better, finishing 6-of-11 for 79 yards and an interception. You thought Dillon Gabriel might look good against Bears third-stringers and cut candidates? Think again. He was 6-of-8 for 23 yards and an interception.

The trio of bleak outings goes a long way to confirming what most suspected about the Browns entering the preseason: no team appears to have a worse quarterback situation.

Outside of an 81-yard touchdown drive largely set up by running back Dylan Sampson, who gained 43 yards on a screen pass five yards behind the line of scrimmage, Watson failed to move the offense. The Browns averaged 12.4 yards per drive on his five other series — the longest gain was 25 yards — and he finished cold, losing a fumble and leading to two three-and-outs on his final three drives.
