With Rasheed Walker missing practice due to a groin injury, the pressure is on second-year Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Jordan Morgan to earn a promotion during training camp this summer.
Morgan played offensive tackle at Arizona, but the Packers moved him inside to guard during his rookie campaign after selecting him with the No. 25 pick in the 2024 draft. The six-foot-five, 311-pound athlete played 65 snaps at left guard and 120 snaps at right guard.
Per Rob Demovsky of ESPN, Morgan’s best chance to earn the starting left tackle job is right now while Walker is out with the groin issue.
“If Jordan Morgan is to make a run at the starting left tackle spot, this might be his time to do it, Demovsky wrote. “The 2024 first-round pick opened camp splitting time between right guard and left tackle, but with Rasheed Walker (groin) out, Morgan has taken the bulk of the No. 1 left tackle reps the past two practices.
“Morgan was up and down at Saturday’s Family Night event, which was in front of nearly 60,000 fans at Lambeau Field. He held his own against on two snaps against Lukas Van Ness in the one-on-one pass drill, but then got bull rushed by Van Ness for a likely sack during one of the team periods.”
Morgan stands to earn a lot of money if he can win and hold on to a tackle job. Per Over The Cap, the top-10 left tackles in the league make $20+ million per season. The 10th-highest paid right guard, Broncos OG Mike McGlinchey, makes $17,500,000 per year.
As a first-round pick, the Packers are hoping Morgan can develop into he blindside protection for quarterback Jordan Love. In the final season of his contract, Walker is trying to secure a starting job in the future.
LaFleur likes how Morgan has competed in training camp.
“To get him outside at left tackle, there’s going to be some hard lessons along the way,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said. “But I love how he’s attacked this thing. The work that he put in throughout the course of the offseason has been pretty evident.”
Now it’s time for Morgan to go for the kill.
