Pro Football Focus gives the San Francisco 49ers a poor grade for how they have handled the offseason

It's been an offseason of change in San Francisco.

The 49ers have lost key contributors such as safety Talonoa Hufanga, linebacker Dre Greenlaw, wide receiver Deebo Samuel, and defensive end Javon Hargrave. They didn't make much of a splash at all during free agency, but focused on re-signing guys like tight end George Kittle, fullback Kyle Juszczyk, and defensive tackle Kevin Givens.

San Francisco is undergoing a bit of a youth movement, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. Six of its first eight picks during the 2025 NFL Draft were spent on defensive players, with most of them expected to contribute right off the bat. However, the folks over at Pro Football Focus believe that the 49ers have become a worse team than when we last saw them, giving them a D for their offseason grade.

From PFF: "Overall, the 49ers appeared to get worse this offseason. Getting Robert Saleh back as defensive coordinator could be a big positive, as he had success in that position with this very regime. But outside of that, the team lost Dre Greenlaw, Deebo Samuel and Talanoa Hufanga and didn’t meaningfully address their offensive line. San Francisco's draft was heavily focused on improving in run defense, which was needed after they finished 2025 with a 54.6 team PFF grade in that facet. The 49ers' floor might be higher, but their ceiling seems lower."

2025 may be a soft rebuild for the 49ers, but it was necessary. Their roster was aging and many of their top players were injury prone. Perhaps S.F. could have been a little more active during free agency, but like most good teams, it's building through the draft. No other team in the NFC West is likely to run away with the division, so the 49ers could still be a playoff team.
