The Los Angeles Chargers have talented quarterback Justin Herbert, and head coach Jim Harbaugh is probably his biggest fan. However, at his core, Harbaugh is still a head coach that loves physical football. That means as talented as Herbert is, the run game will be a huge part of what the Chargers do offensively.
That's why Los Angeles spent the offseason rebuilding their running back room. The team signed veteran rusher Najee Harris and drafted Omarion Hampton in the first round. While they have the chance to be an elite duo, one expert is making the case for the Chargers to add one more veteran running back to the party.
In a recent ESPN piece, Seth Walder proposed five win-win training camp trades. One of the proposals included the Chargers and two other teams, so it would technically be a win-win-win trade. Either way, the move proposed Los Angeles, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Chicago Bears exchanging veteran running backs and draft picks.
Walder proposed L.A. gets D'Andre Swift and a 2026 sixth-round pick from Chicago, Chicago gets Rachaad White and a 2027 seventh-round pick from the Chargers, and the Buccaneers receive a 2026 fifth-round pick from the Bears.
Adding Swift to Los Angeles’ running back room would give the team one of the deepest rooms in the league. Entering the sixth season of his career, Swift is coming off a season with the Bears where he ran for 959 yards and six touchdowns. The production was a slight step back from his Pro Bowl season with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023, when he rushed for 1,049 yards and five touchdowns.
Of course, Swift wouldn’t be a star running back in L.A. that carries the entire rushing attack, but he wouldn’t have to be. He’d be able to play alongside Harris and Hampton, maximizing his opportunities on the field. Being a trio would keep each one fresh, and give the Chargers a dominant run game as they try to elevate their status as contenders.
