Just when it seemed his time in the NFL might be over, veteran punter Cameron Johnston has found a new home. After a rollercoaster offseason with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Johnston is packing his bags for Buffalo, signing with a Bills team that has its sights set on a Super Bowl.

The move, first reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, comes as a surprise to some but offers Johnston a shot at redemption and a chance to play for a top AFC contender. It’s a significant turn of events for a player who was released just before the season began. The Bills released punter Brad Robbins to make room for Johnson.

Johnson spent pre-season in a Battle for a Steelers roster spot

Cameron Johnston’s journey to Buffalo was anything but simple. He spent the entire offseason locked in a fierce competition with Corliss Waitman for the Steelers’ punting job. The two went back and forth, with neither man gaining a clear edge. The preseason became the ultimate proving ground.

During the preseason games, the battle was intense. Johnston’s performance was solid, but Waitman delivered some booming punts that turned heads. In the end, despite a shaky final preseason punt from Waitman, the Steelers made the tough call and sided with him, releasing Johnston. This decision left Johnston, who had signed a three-year, $9 million deal with Pittsburgh in March 2024, without a team.

From Injury to Opportunity

Cameron Johnston’s tenure in Pittsburgh was marked by misfortune. After being named the undisputed starter last season, his 2024 campaign was cut short by a season-ending knee injury in the very first game.

Now, he gets a fresh start. With 96 NFL games under his belt from his time with the Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles and Houston Texans, Johnston brings a wealth of experience. It’s a comeback story of resilience, and for Johnston, the ultimate goal is clear: help the Buffalo Bills win a championship.
