LAS VEGAS -- Well that's a bummer. Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey lose out on the 2023 NFL MVP award.
As expected, the award went to Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. It was practically all said and done when the Ravens decimated the 49ers on Christmas. Jackson was excellent that day completing 23-of-35 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns. He also put up 45 yards rushing on 7 carries with a 30 yard run being the highlight. Jackson has been sweet all season long.
This award essentially came down to the wire since Week 15 is what really changed the dynamic. Purdy had been in the discussion for the last two months of the season and rightfully so. In fact, it was believed that he was the leader until the 49ers played the Ravens. However, what might have also done him in is the fact that McCaffrey was also a MVP finalist. To have two MVP finalists on the same team is rare, so voters likely used that against both of them.
The Christmas game between the 49ers and Ravens certainly tipped the scale in Jackson's favor, but I think having two MVPs on one team also played a factor. Either way, the 49ers, Purdy, and McCaffrey will be unbothered by this news. Jackson may have won the award, but the 49ers will happily take that knowing they are still playing. They wouldn't be able to really celebrate anyways as they prepare for their Super Bowl matchup with the Chiefs.
On the bright side, McCaffrey took home the Offensive Player of the Year award, so at least one 49ers player took home an award.
