QB coach Mark Brunell reveals what Lions must do to win games

For a team that didn't make the playoffs in 2022, the Detroit Lions have received a lot of buzz this offseason. Knocking the Green Bay Packers out of the playoffs in Week 18 has propelled Detroit to their current ultimate underdog status.

Positive buzz, however, doesn't win football games. Correcting the things that made them a 9-8 team that narrowly missed the playoffs does, though. For quarterbacks coach Mark Brunell, he sees good days ahead, but also isn't shying away from what the offense has to work on.

"If the quarterback takes care of the ball, we run the ball well, do all the things that we talk about doing we will win some football games," Brunell said. "But we have to go out there and do it."

Detroit's starting QB Jared Goff took care of the ball last season. Goff had the best TD:INT ratio of his career at 29-7 and ranked No. 7 with a passer rating of 99.3. The Lions weren't too shabby running the ball in 2022 either, ranking No. 11. The Lions' defense is what needs the most improvement, as they gave up 392.4 yards per game, which ranked dead last.

Brunell didn't dwell on the negatives and wanted to extenuate the positives that he's been observing in June.

"We have a good defense. We have a good supporting cast. I love our system. Good coaching staff," Brunell said. "Our (offensive) coordinator (Ben Johnson) is amazing and I can't say enough about him."

As QBs coach, the main focus of Brunell's attention is on Goff and the rest of the QB room. As things currently stand, Brunell is tutoring Goff, who may be at the top of his game, more so than during his time with the Los Angeles Rams. Goff seems to think that's the case as well.

"I think as you get older and get more mature in the league that happens, and I’d certainly say so," Goff said last week, per LionsWire. "I think I said a handful of times last year that I thought I was playing the best football of my career and plan on continuing to do that."

The NFC North could be up for grabs this year, especially with Aaron Rodgers no longer in Green Bay. 2023 is as good of a year in recent memory for Detroit to make a playoff run. The Lions haven't made the playoffs since 2016, losing to the Seattle Seahawks, 26-6, in the Wild Card round.
