QB Justin Herbert: Chargers need 'consistency' to make playoffs in 2022

Earlier this month, Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley remarked how 24-year-old quarterback Justin Herbert was becoming a better leader as he prepares for his third pro season. Such intangibles may include the young signal-caller offering brutally honest evaluations of both himself and those around him.

The Chargers held a record of 8-5 last December before they lost three of their final four games to fall short of a playoff berth. While speaking with SiriusXM NFL Radio, Herbert admitted he and others on the roster must do better to be at their best for all 17 games during the upcoming season.

"It’s all about consistency," Herbert explained, per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. "We have to put together a full season for us to play the football that we want to. We’ve definitely added some guys on defense, picked up a few guys on offense, and had a great offseason so far. As soon as the season comes, we understand it’s all about execution and being sharp week in and week out, never looking ahead and making sure we’re doing everything we can to give ourselves a shot on Sundays."

According to ESPN stats, Herbert ended last season second in the entire league behind only Tom Brady with 5,014 passing yards, third with 38 touchdowns through the air and third with a 65.6 total QBR. Just last week, he touched upon his overall belief in the Chargers' "staff, all the teammates, the front office" regarding possibly signing an extension with the organization as soon as next winter.
