QB Trevor Lawrence is failing to deliver for Jaguars

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence was supposed to be the Jacksonville Jaguars' savior, but three seasons into his career, he remains closer to average than elite.

As a rookie, Lawrence threw for 12 touchdowns and was tied for the league lead with 17 interceptions in 17 games — 13 of those under in-over-his-head head coach Urban Meyer, who was fired by the Jaguars with the team 2-11.

In his second season in 2022, Lawrence greatly improved, looking like a franchise QB under new Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson, a former NFL signal-caller himself. He finished the season with 4,113 yards, 25 touchdown passes and eight interceptions while helping the Jaguars win the AFC South.

Now in his third year, Lawrence has declined from his successful second season. His completion percentage (66.3 to 65.9), touchdown percentage (4.3 to 3.7) and passer rating (95.2 to 90.5) have decreased. Meanwhile, his interception percentage has increased (1.4 to 2).

In 2023, Lawrence has thrown for 3,525 yards, 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions and rushed for 300 yards and four TDs. He hasn't been bad, but he also hasn't been great.

A big issue with Lawrence is his inability to hold onto the ball. He is tied for third in the league with six fumbles lost after leading the league last season with nine.

He also makes simple mistakes too often, as on "Sunday Night Football" against the Ravens, when his clock-management error led to zero points in a 23-7 loss.

A lot of the blame for Jacksonville's 31-27 loss to the Browns in Week 14 can be attributed to Lawrence, too. He threw three interceptions and was outperformed by veteran Joe Flacco, a 38-year-old free agent who signed with Cleveland in November.

The Jaguars front office has surrounded Lawrence with offensive talent — drafting his college teammate (RB Travis Etienne), signing a starting WR in free agency (Christian Kirk) and acquiring another (Calvin Ridley) via trade. Despite the additions, Lawrence has not raised his play significantly, and former NFL players have taken notice.

"I'm waiting on this fantastic Trevor that apparently I have been missing to show up," tweeted former All-Pro CB Richard Sherman, now an analyst with Fox Sports and Prime Video, following Jacksonville's 34-3 loss at home to the 49ers on Nov. 12.

All-Pro RB LeSean McCoy — now an analyst for Fox Sports — criticized Lawrence following the Ravens game on Sunday.

With three weeks left in the regular season, Jacksonville — which weeks ago was vying for the No. 1 seed in the AFC — will be fighting for a playoff spot. Jacksonville is 8-6 and tied with division rivals Houston and Indianapolis.

The Jaguars close out the 2023-24 schedule at Tampa Bay (7-7), vs. Carolina (2-12) and at Tennessee (5-9) — all winnable games. If Lawrence  — who's in concussion protocol — is available, he must play better. Otherwise, a once-promising season in Jacksonville will end with far more questions than answers.
