Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Quinnen Williams delivered one of his best performances of the season in the team’s 38-21 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, providing a potential turning point for a defense that has struggled to find consistency.
Williams entered the divisional matchup acknowledging that Dallas had areas to improve, including his own performance. The veteran defender backed up those comments with a season-high four solo tackles, three tackles for loss and his third sack of the season.
The Cowboys improved to 3-4 with the win, snapping a two-game losing streak and giving their defense something positive to build on. While Williams believes Dallas still has work to do, his performance and leadership could be important as the team attempts to climb back into the NFC East race.
Williams did not shy away from the Cowboys’ defensive shortcomings heading into the Eagles game. The defensive tackle discussed the need to correct mistakes and admitted he had not consistently performed at the level he expected of himself.
That accountability was followed by a strong showing against Philadelphia. Williams disrupted the Eagles’ offense throughout the game, recording three tackles for loss and bringing down the quarterback for his third sack of the season.
“It’s huge to get in that win column,” Williams said after the game. “We didn’t put together a perfect game, or to our standard. We’ve got to go learn from it and grow from it, but it’s amazing to get a win. We play this game to get a win, and I’m just super happy to get it.”
Williams’ impact was particularly important as Dallas continued adjusting to defensive coordinator Christian Parker’s scheme. The Cowboys need their experienced players to set the tone, and Williams has an opportunity to help establish the standard for the defensive line.
Despite the victory, Dallas did not completely solve its defensive problems against Philadelphia. The Eagles finished with 121 rushing yards, marking the fifth time in seven games that an opponent had surpassed 100 yards on the ground.
Running back Saquon Barkley was especially effective before leaving the game with a back injury. He gained 62 yards on seven carries, averaging 8.9 yards per attempt.
Those numbers illustrate why Williams believes the defensive line must improve, even after a strong individual performance.
“I think we’re heading in the right direction,” Williams said. “I’ve got to watch the film, and we’ve got to fix some things, especially as a D-line, especially when we come down to stop the run. I feel like we can do better than that.”
The Cowboys showed improvement as the game progressed, allowing only seven points in the second half. Dallas has also held opponents below 25 points in three consecutive games, offering some evidence that the defense is beginning to become more reliable.
The victory over Philadelphia gave Dallas a boost after consecutive losses to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Green Bay Packers. But Williams understands that one strong performance does not mean the defense has reached its potential.
His focus remains on correcting mistakes, building on positive plays and improving from one week to the next. That mindset could help the Cowboys develop the consistency they have lacked during the opening portion of the season.
“I think it’s big,” Williams said of the win. “(We’re) just focused on what we can control, and then getting better every single week. Learning from our mistakes and building on the things that we did good and fixing the things that we did bad, every single week, and going in the right trajectory.”
Dallas will need that approach as it prepares for its Week 8 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. The Cowboys have an opportunity to win consecutive games for the first time this season, but their defense must continue improving if they want to make a serious push in the NFC East.
