Oklahoma's R Mason Thomas is one of the top edge defender prospects in the 2026 NFL Draft, with a combination of production, toughness and explosiveness that should be attractive to every defensive coordinator in the league. His high-effort style of play is the cherry on top of an impressive skill set that should make him a top-50 pick.

Here's everything NFL fans need to know about Thomas heading into this year's draft:

R Mason Thomas' Vitals

Height: 6-2

Weight: 249

Age: 21

R Mason Thomas' Strengths

A tenacious edge rusher with game-wrecking ability, Thomas sets the tone for the entire defense with his high-octane style of play. He has an explosive first step, and shows the natural bend to beat tackles around the arc and arrive at the quarterback with a vengeance. He’s a high-motor defender who knows how to finish the job, turning consistent pressures into sacks and potential takeaways, and he packs surprising power as a tackler for an undersized edge defender. He’s a smart player who doesn’t lose his gap integrity against the run, and he knows not to overrun the quarterback and allow escapes by not maintaining proper depth in his rush lanes. Thomas has violent hands at the point of attack that allow him to stay free and not get washed out of the play.

R Mason Thomas' Weaknesses

Thomas’ lack of ideal size didn’t prove to be a serious detriment at the college level too often, but that could change at the next level, where opposing blockers will be bigger, faster, stronger, and more technically sound. If he’s on the field for early downs, he’ll have to prove he can anchor the edge despite his smaller frame. Nagging injuries have held Thomas back at times, which could lead to durability questions from NFL teams.

Final Analysis

Size isn’t everything, and Thomas proved that by dominating as a pass rusher against top competition in the SEC. He could still struggle early on as a run defender due to his undersized frame, but getting after the quarterback is the top priority for any edge defender, and few in this class do it better than Thomas when he’s healthy.
