Raheem Morris comments on his job security

Amid another lost season following five straight losses, the writing appears to be on the wall for Raheem Morris, who feels like nothing more than a lame duck head coach at this point.

It’s possible the Falcons decide to move on mid-season, and another loss to the lowly Saints this weekend might force Arthur Blank’s hand, but there’s not much Atlanta can really gain by firing Morris right now, or Zac Robinson for that matter. The next Falcons head coach is not in the building, at least he shouldn’t be, and nobody has a wealth of experience calling plays that could competently take over for Robinson.

If it happens, not many people in Atlanta would be upset, but these last seven weeks are likely a final opportunity for Morris to show Blank he can get it done, and the Falcons head coach is aware of the noise.

“That’s just part of its” Morris said, via Josh Kendall of The Athletic. “You always think about that. That’s part of it. Our job is winning. That’s what we’re supposed to do.”

Morris has been around the league long enough to know the deal. This league is about wins and losses, and if you can’t win, you’re not going to be around for long. The Falcons have poured immense resources into the team since firing Arthur Smith. They’ve pounded their chest while screaming, “Playoffs or bust.” And yet, they find themselves with their worst record through 10 games since 2020, out of the postseason race prior to Thanksgiving.

Unless something changes dramatically over the final seven weeks, there’s no world where Raheem Morris should return as head coach for a third season. The same can be said for general manager Terry Fontenot, who has not overseen a winning season in his five years with the team. It’s once again time to clean house in Atlanta.
