Raheem Morris on the future of Falcons kicker Parker Romo

Through eight games, the Atlanta Falcons’ kickers have already cost them an opportunity to win two of them.

The first came in Week 1, when Younghoe Koo missed a game-tying field goal that would have sent the game to overtime. That led to Parker Romo taking over as the team’s starting kicker, and on Sunday against the Patriots, he missed an extra point that would have tied the game with 4:40 remaining.

It was Romo’s first missed extra point of the season, but his brief seven-game stint with the Falcons has been far from encouraging. He’s converted just 11 of 14 field goals, including 2 of 4 from beyond 40 yards. Understandably, that’s led to even more questions about the kicking situation, and while Raheem Morris hasn’t locked Romo out of the building yet, he did acknowledge that the team is currently evaluating other options at the position.

At 3-5, the hill to climb back into playoff contention might already be too tall to overcome. That said, this isn’t something the Falcons can afford to overlook. Doing so last season is how they found themselves in the spot they are in right now.

Younghoe Koo’s kicking issues that lingered into this season were not a new phenomenon. He cost the Falcons a playoff spot last year with his leg, and the team essentially neglected the problem, handing him the job without any legitimate competition in the offseason. Had they addressed the issue expeditiously, it’s possible Atlanta’s record would be flipped, finding themselves firmly in the mix for a playoff spot.

If Atlanta does anything worthwhile the rest of the season, at the very least, they can figure out their kicking situation so it doesn’t bleed into next season.
