Raiders add former first-round pick to receiving corps

The latest move of the Las Vegas Raiders was to add much-needed experience to their receiving room.

On Tuesday, the Raiders announced that they had signed wide receiver Phillip Dorsett.

Dorsett was just one of a slew of roster moves made by the Raiders, as they also signed safety Jamal Adams, cornerback JT Woods, guard Atonio Mafi and wide receiver Seth Williams on the same day.

In corresponding moves, the Raiders have cut cornerback Mello Dotson, linebacker Jailin Walker and wide receivers Key’Shawn Smith and Zakhari Franklin.

Dorsett was a first-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts back in 2015. He is also a former Raider in his own right, signing with the team back in 2023 but not playing a game. While he faces long odds to make the roster, Dorsett adds some much-needed experience to the room.

The only two receivers with more than two seasons of NFL experience prior to Dorsett’s signing were Jakobi Meyers and Collin Johnson, so it was a good idea to bring him in.

The primary takeaway from all of these moves is that the Raiders are not afraid to continue adding depth, even as training camp kicks off. The team entered this phase of the offseason with persisting question about their receiving corps and secondary, and Tuesday’s signings provided answers at both positions. While it is unclear what contributions to expect from the group, bringing them on even as potential practice squad options could end up making these decisions worthwhile.

Dorsett’s experience should prove valuable to the Raiders as they hope to get their young offensive weapons ready for the rigors of the NFL.
