Raiders Announce Big News on Friday

The Las Vegas Raiders have announced a significant coaching change following their defeat to the Denver Broncos on Thursday night.

Vegas suffered a seventh loss of the season in the low-scoring “Thursday Night Football” affair. A blocked punt and missed field goal attempt turned out to be costly, with the Broncos winning marginally, courtesy of a 10-7 scoreline, while quarterback Geno Smith sustained a concerning injury.

The team fell to 2-7, which compounded what has been a difficult campaign, yet it was especially regrettable for special teams coordinator Tom McMahon.

Head coach Pete Carroll made an announcement on Friday afternoon, revealing McMahon had been relieved of his duties and replaced by Derius Swinton III on an interim basis.

"Earlier today, we made the tough decision to relieve Tom McMahon of his duties as special teams coordinator,” Carroll wrote. “I have a great amount of respect for Tom and the work that he has done in this league, but we have decided to move in a different direction.

“Derius Swinton II will assume special teams coordinator duties on an interim basis and we are excited to attack the second half of this season with outstanding intent and purpose. We are grateful for Tom and his work here with the Raiders and wish him nothing but the best moving forward."

To be fair, both sides struggled with execution on special teams during, given the windy conditions at the Broncos’ Empower Field. However, the Raiders’ foibles directly contributed to their loss.

Vegas will return to action against the Dallas Cowboys on Nov. 17 in a “Monday Night Football” clash.
