Raiders' Antonio Pierce already getting disrespected by NFL peers and 2024 season hasn't started yet
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Las Vegas Raiders listened to their players when making the biggest hire of the offseason for their franchise. They had to find a new head coach, and the players wanted then-interim head coach Antonio Pierce to come back in a full-time role. So, that's what happened.

The Raiders messed this up not too long ago when they had the chance to hire Rich Bisaccia. They didn't want to make the same mistake. When you think about how the media looks at the hire, it's revered as the right decision. The fans, for the most part, love the decision as well.

However, when the NFL executives around the league were asked by The Athletic to vote on all of the moves that happened around the league, the Raiders' biggest hero didn't get a single vote. He didn't get a first-place, second-place, or third-place vote.

Dave Canales and Antonio Pierce were the only new hires who didn't receive any votes. Canales took over the Carolina Panthers after an impressive season as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator, and he is considered a brilliant offensive mind who runs a quarterback-friendly system and exudes positive energy. But can Canales fix the Panthers with an owner in David Tepper, who is overly involved in the day-to-day matters of football operations? Pierce was promoted after serving as the interim coach following Josh McDaniels' midseason firing. I get why maybe Pierce isn't the flashiest hire. He has very little experience. He isn't a huge name that's well-known. But that doesn't mean he wasn't the best hire for the Raiders. Their two candidates were Pierce and Harbaugh, really, and Harbaugh was going to go to the Los Angeles Chargers regardless of what it felt like.

Pierce fits what the Raiders are and what they would like to get back to. Sure, he may not have won over the votes, but that doesn't mean it was a bad hire. In my opinion, this was the best hire the Raiders could have made.
