Raiders apologize for erroneously announcing Clarence Davis had died

As Ryan Young noted for Yahoo Sports, the Las Vegas Raiders shared some sad news on Thursday when they announced that former Oakland Raiders running back Clarence Davis had died this week at the age of 73.

It turns out somebody jumped the gun.

Mike Florio has since confirmed via a statement sent to Pro Football Talk from the Raiders that Davis is alive.

"The Raiders received notice of Clarence Davis’ passing but have found that information to be false," the organization explained. "The Raiders extend our deepest apologies to the Davis family and the Raider Nation for the erroneous announcement."

Davis played for the Raiders from 1971 through the 1978 season and was a significant part of the team that defeated the Minnesota Vikings to win Super Bowl XI. As Pro Football Talk's Charean Williams (h/t Yahoo Sports) noted, Davis' 137 rushing yards in that victory was a Super Bowl record at the time.

Davis' top highlight-reel play is likely the famous "Sea of Hands" catch he made to clinch a win over the Miami Dolphins in a 1974 playoff game.

"Our current policy is to not post obituaries without an announcement from the team, the league, the family, or some other credible entity, like the Hall of Fame," Florio added about Pro Football Talk's handling of such matters.
