The Kansas City Cheifs have won the AFC West for nine straight seasons, and all signs point to the team continuing that dominance. However, the Las Vegas Raiders, who finished fourth in the division last season, are hoping they can compete with the Chiefs after a strong offseason. The Raiders hired Pete Carroll, traded for Geno Smith, and drafted Ashton Jeanty, amongst many other moves that should improve their win total. Still, Vegas is proving its not ready to be a consistent threat to Kansas City.
The Raiders are currently in a contract battle with their starting left tackle Kolton Miller. Miller was drafted by the franchise in the first round of the 2018 Draft, and was a day one starter at left tackle. In seven years, he has played 109 games and been one of the few consistent bright spots for Vegas. He’s now entering the final year of his contract, and he and the franchise aren’t on the same page about his future,
Raiders reporter Vincent Bonsignore recently reported that Miller wants to be a Raider for life, and the franchise is open to re-signing him, but only at the right price. According to Bonsignore, it could be a challenge for the two sides to find common ground, and that could result in Miller becoming a free agent.
While contract battles of this nature are common throughout the NFL, this being an issue for the Raiders, specifically, shows they aren’t ready to compete with Kansas City.
Left tackle is arguably one of the most important positions in the NFL. Additionally, it’s tough for teams to find tackles that are consistently good. Las Vegas has one, and with all that it has going on, the franchise doesn’t want to secure him. Miller will be 30 when the season starts, and is making it clear he wants to remain with the team. Unless he’s asking for an unreasonable number, there’s no reason the team shouldn’t want to quickly get a deal done.
Nevertheless, if the Raiders and Miller do ultimately part ways, the Chiefs will be able to sit back and laugh, as the gap between the two teams will only get wider.
