Raiders claim ex-49ers player from first waiver spot

Holding the No.1 waiver claim priority, the Las Vegas Raiders have their pick of the litter on any player waived by their original franchise. The franchise already has their eyes set on one former San Francisco 49ers standout.

Las Vegas plans to put a claim in for cornerback Darrell Luter, via Adam Schefter. He is now set to enter the 2026 season with the Raiders.

Holding the No. 1 waiver priority will be a valuable asset for the franchise. They are allowed to put in as many claims as they’d like, and with no one in front of them, a claim guarantees they start the year with the Raiders. Of course, Las Vegas has to stick to the 53-man roster parameters, there are only so many moves they can make. Still, any player who has been waived now has a real opportunity of playing for the Raiders.

Luter now knows for a fact he will. Originally a fifth-round pick by the 49ers back in 2023, he has gone on to appear in 27 games for the franchise, starting three of them. In that time, the cornerback has put up 38 tackles, a pass break up and a fumble recovery.

All three of Luter’s starts came in 2025, as he appeared in all 17 games. As the Raiders build their first roster under head coach Klint Kubiak, their latest addition adds some extra experience in the secondary. He’ll have to quickly learn Las Vegas’ defense to make a true impact though.

The Raiders hold all the cards with their waiver claim priority. Outside of Luter, who they decide to pursue has yet to be seen.
