The Las Vegas Raiders were shut out in ugly fashion Sunday, and the performance was bad enough that interim coach Antonio Pierce is considering a quarterback change.
Pierce declined to guarantee that rookie Aidan O’Connell would get another start in Week 15 against the Los Angeles Chargers, instead saying the team is “still evaluating” the position before Thursday’s game.
“We’re going through that process now,” Pierce said, via Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. “We’ll see how the week goes.”
The two other quarterbacks on the Raiders roster are Jimmy Garoppolo and Brian Hoyer. Garoppolo was benched earlier in the season, and starting Hoyer, a veteran backup, would not promise much upside in the short- or long-term.
O’Connell took over as the Raiders’ starter in Week 9, at the same time former coach Josh McDaniels was fired. He has not shown a lot of flashes since becoming the starter, and has thrown four touchdowns and seven interceptions on the season. He threw for only 171 yards and an interception in Sunday’s 3-0 loss to the Vikings, a defeat that all but wiped out any lingering playoff hopes.
