Carl Nassib was one of the most well-known names in football in 2021 after he changed the course of the NFL forever. On June 21, 2021, Carl Nassib came out as gay on his Instagram. With that, Nassib became the first active NFL player to come out as gay. Carl Nassib was recognized at the 2022 NFL Honors for his announcement.

“I finally feel comfortable enough to get it off my chest” Nassib said in his announcement. “I just think that representation and visibility are important. I actually hope that like one day videos like this and the whole coming out process are just not necessary. Until then, I’m going to do my best and do my part to cultivate a culture that’s accepting, that’s compassionate,” he continued. Nassib went on to share about a foundation called the Trevor Project.

The Trevor Project works with youth members of the LGBTQIA+ community to ensure they have a supportive and trusted adult, and a community that is there for them. During the NFL Honors, Nassib’s impact was brought to light as members of the Trevor Project and the NFL community shared how he has changed the lives of so many.

“We know that one accepting adult in an LGBTQ young person’s life can reduce the likelihood that they will have a suicide attempt by up to 40%, it just has to be somebody that is willing to love that person who they are,” said Trevor Project staff member, Casey Pick.

Nassib became that person for millions of children that day in June. Pick was one of many to share how important Nassib’s efforts are. You can find the full video here.

Nassib remains the only active NFL player to come out. His partnership with The Trevor Project and the work he does in the LGBTQIA+ community continues to change lives each and every day. The representation he gives to children in similar situations is worth more than any statistic he could bring to the football field.

If you or anyone you know needs mental health assistance related to sexual orientation, you can find the Trevor Project Hotline here.
