Raiders-Dolphins: What to watch for in Week 3 of preseason

The Las Vegas Raiders moved to 2-0 in the preseason after Sunday's victory over Minnesota.  With two weeks left to work out kinks, here's what to look for Saturday against the Miami Dolphins.

The right tackle carousel

New Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels must have a starter to count on at right tackle before Week 1 of the regular season. A month into camp, McDaniels is still operating with the position open.

Second-year offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood has failed to live up to expectations. His play has been decent at best. The former first-round pick must stand out to have a chance to start.

Rookie tackle Thayer Munford is a candidate for the spot. He has played well lately, showing flashes of success in the win over the Vikings. He's the probable starter at right tackle at the moment, but like Leatherwood, he has a lot to prove.

The sleeper is veteran Jermaine Eluemunor. Entering his sixth season, the 6-foot-4, 345-pound lineman could steal either the guard or tackle job on the right side.

Who's the pass-rusher behind Maxx Crosby and Chandler Jones?

Las Vegas is strong at end with Crosby and Jones. However, they need depth and another solid contributor on the D-line.

Pass-rusher Malcolm Koonce played well in Week 2, earning a sack and another tackle. He'll look to build on his opportunity to play heavy minutes with a good outing versus Miami.

In direct competition with Koonce is linebacker Tashawn Bower. Bower had a sack of his own versus the Vikings and is rising on the Raiders' radar. With recent signee Jordan Jenkins joining the team, Bower must show coaches he belongs.

Other weapons for QB Derek Carr

Carr has excellent passing weapons in wide receivers Davante Adams, Hunter Renfrow and tight end Darren Waller. But who else will step up?

Two players to watch are Tyron Johnson and DJ Turner. Turner is a 5-foot-9 speed threat who could make the roster. He had three catches for 58 yards and a touchdown and a 30-yard punt return in his latest outing.

Although only catching one ball for seven yards last week, Johnson had a productive Hall of Fame Game, racking up 39 yards receiving. He must produce versus the Dolphins to stay in Sin City.

Las Vegas backfield

McDaniels loves the versatility he has at running back. As he did in New England, he probably will go with a running back-by-committee approach.

“We have some guys that are kind of multifaceted in terms of what they do and bring," he said, per the team's web site. "We've tried to give them all different opportunities here in the first few games to try to do some of those things.”

Rookie Zamir White should have a bigger say in the run game. With talk of White being the back of the future, possibly replacing Josh Jacobs, he must take advantage.

Kenyan Drake, coming off a season-ending ankle injury, should get reps. Ex-Jet Austin Walter and veteran Ameer Abdullah are also players to watch.

Amik Robertson tries to make the cut

The third-year cornerback is fighting to keep his spot on the roster. In a secondary featuring Nate Hobbs and Rock Ya-Sin, it can be difficult to find chances to showcase talent.

Robertson acknowledged the team has "a very competitive DB group," per the team's website

Playing with a chip on his shoulder, Robertson--who's only 5-foot-8-- must play every snap like it is his last to win over the coaches.
