Deciding to completely start over this offseason, again, may be one of the best decisions the Las Vegas Raiders have made in some time. Sure, this is technically the third regime in three years, but it needed to happen.
Now, they have guys in the building who know how to win, let alone have guys in the building who have experience. No shade at Antonio Pierce, but as a head coach, he didn't know how to win, and he had no real experience. With Pete Carroll, who won a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks over the Denver Broncos and went to another one, losing to the dynasty that was the New England Patriots, they will know how to win.
And it goes even further than Carroll. They brought in a general manager who had been a part of a winning organization, too, as John Spytek won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as their assistant GM. So, yes, this regime feels very different than the last one, or even the last three that they have had.
And the players feel the difference, too, and the season hasn't even started yet, really.
"I would just say the mindset," DT Adam Butler said at mandatory minicamp when asked what difference he's seen in the past regimes and this new one. "This is all about competition, and that just makes everybody better. I like what Coach Pete [Carroll] has done, very pleased with him. But I expect nothing less, he's a legendary coach, and he came in and showed that."Â
When it comes to how Carroll does things, you will be able to notice it all, even as fans and media. You can see the change in culture, and everyone is so hyped for the season, and these players really think and believe they can be a good football team because of that. Carroll has changed the culture, which was a huge issue last year. And, he has these guys thinking the right way.
Carroll is a player's coach, too. He is very hands-on with his players and even does drills with them sometimes. You see the last day of mandatory minicamp, he had the equipment guy out there running in those giant hamster balls that are inflatable. They are having fun, but don't think that means they aren't working.
The Raiders are already making changes based on what this new regime is doing.
